Online Bookmarks

October 9, 2009

ikeep If you’re ever on vacation and are using someone elses computer, it’s always a bit of a pain since you don’t have your computers bookmarks handy. You try to remember all those URL’s, but it’s no use. iKeepBookmarks is one solution. (Thanks to Bev for this tip.)

Your first setup a free account and then import your passwords. While they don’t mention importing Firefox bookmarks, I did it without any problem. Now you’ll have your bookmarks handy no matter where you go or which computer you use.

Moving Firefox to a Different Computer

October 5, 2009

fflogoIf you have Firefox on more than one computer, it’s a bit of an aggravation when you work on one computer and fix your Firefox addons, settings, bookmarks and toolbars just so, but when you go to your other computer, of course nothing has changed. Rather than going through and manually changing everything again, here’s a solution.

Firefox keeps all of its settings in one profile folder. In XP you can find it under:

C: – Documents and Settings – Your Account Name – Application Data – Mozilla – Firefox – Profiles.

Then just copy the profile to a thumb drive and paste it into your new computer in the same area.

Want Some Cookies?

April 7, 2009

cookiesCookies are files which are left on your computer just by visiting websites. While most of these cookies are innocuous and sometimes helpful, 3rd-party cookies will follow you from site to site and track your movement over the web.

If you’d like to turn this behavior off in Firefox, go to “Tools – Options – Privacy” and uncheck the box (Accept third-party cookies.”)

You then need to delete all your cokies by choosing “Tools – Clear Private Data and checking the Cookies box.”

Lots of Tabs in Firefox

April 7, 2009

lots-of-tabs

If you use lots of tabs in Firefox (Ctrl T) you may quickly run out of real estate across the top of the page. A new addon suggested by Steve of GRC is called Tree Style Tab.”  I’ve given it a try and think it’s great. I normally start out my day, but perusing 29 different websites. Using this addon, I can just hit the Home key and all 29 sites will load and show up on the left side of the screen. It also will create sub-trees if you are looking at one site and right click on a number of links on the same site. For the power user this is a great tool.
